Tuxedo vs Suit: What to Have Made in the Tropics
Most of the confusion here is vocabulary. A tuxedo, a dinner jacket and a dinner suit are the same garment under three names, and none of them is simply a smarter version of a dark suit.
Settle the words first
Five words do the work of three ideas here, and settling them removes most of the confusion before the comparison starts. Dinner suit and dinner jacket are the British terms for what Americans call a tuxedo, and they describe the same garment. Black tie is not a garment at all — it is the dress code that garment belongs to.
A lounge suit is the third thing: an ordinary day suit, however dark. It is not evening dress, and no amount of black makes it so. The words get used interchangeably in conversation and no tailor will misunderstand you, but the distinction matters the moment an invitation states a dress code.
What actually separates the two garments
Every row below is a difference in finish rather than something you can improvise on the night. That is why the choice is worth settling before the cloth is cut: a dark suit can be worn to a black-tie evening and will be perfectly acceptable, but it does not become a dinner suit by adding a bow tie.

Which one to have made comes down to how often it will be worn, and for most people that answer is the suit.
Have a suit made if it will be worn often
A well-cut dark suit in a tropical weight is the more useful garment by a wide margin. It carries a wedding as a guest, a dinner, a meeting and a funeral. If you are having exactly one thing made on a trip, this is almost always the right answer.
Have a dinner suit made if you are in the wedding party
Or if you attend formal evenings regularly, or if hire jackets have never fitted you. Grooms in particular benefit, because the photographs last much longer than the evening does and a hired jacket shows in them.
When a dinner suit is the wrong choice
A dinner suit is the wrong choice whenever the event does not actually call for one, and that is more often than the shops selling them suggest. Three cases in particular:
- One evening, and no others in sight. A garment worn once is an expensive way to solve a single night, and a well-cut dark suit will carry that night acceptably.
- You are not sure the event is black tie. If the invitation does not say, ask the host rather than guess — a dinner jacket in a room of lounge suits is as conspicuous as the reverse.
- It is the only thing you are having made on this trip. If you can have one garment made, make it the one you will wear next month as well.
What the tropics change
Black tie was designed for a cold northern evening indoors. Almost nothing about that describes a Ko Samui reception.
Weight and lining
A conventional dinner jacket is often made in a heavy barathea. In this climate that is punishing. A tropical-weight wool around 210 to 250 grams, half-lined or unlined, keeps the look and removes most of the misery. Layers
Cummerbund rather than waistcoat, and be willing to lose the jacket after the formalities. Nobody at an outdoor reception in the heat objects, and planning for it is better than sweating through it.
Ivory jackets, and when they work
The ivory or off-white dinner jacket with black trousers is a genuine tropical tradition rather than a costume, and it looks superb at an evening beach reception. It is less versatile than black or midnight blue, so it is a second dinner jacket rather than a first for most people. If it says black tie optional, or you are a guest, a very dark suit is genuinely fine and you will wear it a hundred times more often. Should the lapel be satin or grosgrain?
Both are correct and it is an aesthetic choice rather than a rule. Satin has a high shine and photographs brightly, which suits a reception. Grosgrain has a fine ribbed texture, reads quieter in person and tends to age better in the photographs you will look at in ten years. Whichever you choose, the lapel facing, the buttons and the trouser braid should all match each other.
Do I need a waistcoat or a cummerbund?
You need one or the other, and never both, because their job is the same: covering the trouser waistband so the shirt does not break the line between jacket and trousers. What shirt goes with a dinner jacket?
A white cotton shirt with a turndown collar and a covered placket is the safe modern choice, worn with a black bow tie you tie yourself. Marcella or pleated fronts are traditional and still correct.
