Planning the wedding suit

Plan the wedding suit from the venue rather than from the suit, because where and when you are marrying decides almost everything that follows.

Start from the venue, not the suit

Where and when you are getting married decides almost everything else. A beach ceremony at 4pm, a garden villa at sunset and an air-conditioned resort ballroom are three genuinely different briefs.

Beach

Sand, glare and wind. Linen or wool-linen in a light tone — stone, sand, pale blue. No waistcoat unless you love the photograph more than the afternoon. Consider going without a jacket for the ceremony itself and adding it for the photographs, which is a normal and elegant choice here rather than a compromise.

Garden or villa

The most forgiving setting and the most photographed. Tropical-weight wool or a wool-linen blend in mid-blue, olive or warm grey. This is where a three-piece works, because the light is softer and the evening cools down.

Ballroom or indoor reception

Air conditioning changes the calculation, and this is the one setting where a proper dinner suit is worth it. Midnight blue photographs with more depth than black.

Dressing the whole party

Coordinating a group is a different job from making one suit, and most of the mistakes happen in the same places.

Order from the same bolt. Two "navy" jackets cut from different batches can read visibly different in the same photograph. If the party is being dressed together, the cloth should come off one roll — that single decision removes the most common wedding-photo complaint.

Match, do not clone. The most successful parties we dress put the groom in something subtly distinct — a different lapel, a waistcoat when the others have none, a slightly lighter or darker tone in the same family. Identical suits across six men flatten the photographs and rarely flatter everyone, because six men are six different shapes.

Fit each person individually. Coordinated colour, individual cut. A groomsman in a suit that fits badly is more visible in the photographs than one in a marginally different shade.

One point of contact. Nominate a single person — usually the best man rather than the groom — to hold the schedule and chase people. We will work to whoever that is.

A realistic timeline

We plan backwards from the ceremony, and the shape is usually this:

• Before you fly: message us with the date, venue, party size and any colour scheme. We pull cloth options in advance.
• Day 1–2 of the trip: everyone measured. This is the appointment that must not slip; the whole schedule is built on it.
• A few days later: first fittings, individually.
• At least 48 hours before the ceremony: final collection. We build in that margin deliberately, so a last correction is never happening on the morning.

Guests arriving at different times is the norm, not a problem — we schedule around arrival dates. For anyone landing very late, tell us early and we will plan what is achievable rather than improvising. Our express timelines set out the honest per-garment windows.

Details worth deciding early

• Waistcoat or not. Adds formality and photographs beautifully; adds heat. A lighter back panel is the usual compromise.
• Shirt collar. If there are ties, the collar has to work with the knot. If there are no ties, ask for a collar with enough structure to stand open — a collapsing collar ruins otherwise good photographs.
• Trouser break. Slightly shorter than you would wear at home. Sand and grass both punish a full break.
• Buttonholes. Tell us if there will be boutonnières — a working lapel buttonhole with a stem loop behind it is a five-minute addition at the time and impossible afterwards.
• Lining. Half-lined or unlined for an outdoor ceremony. It is the single biggest comfort decision.

The wider party, and afterwards

The wider party can be dressed here too, because this is not only a menswear tailor — and the garments should still work after the wedding.

Brides, bridesmaids and guests

We are not only a menswear tailor. Bridesmaid dresses, mothers of the bride and groom, and tailored pieces for women in the party are all made to measure — see women's tailoring and dressmaking. Coordinating both sides of a wedding party through one tailor is considerably simpler than splitting it.

After the wedding

Everyone's pattern stays on file. Groomsmen who liked their suit routinely order a second in a different cloth once they are home, and we ship it. It is also worth saying: a wedding suit that has been cut properly is a suit you will wear again — which is the main argument for having one made rather than hiring.

The single most useful thing you can do is message before you fly, with the date and the number of people. We will come to your hotel or villa anywhere on Ko Samui to measure the party together at no extra cost, which for a group is usually far easier than getting everyone to the shop.
