Where a shirt goes wrong off the peg

Ready-made shirts are built around two measurements — collar and sleeve — and everything else is an average. That is why the collar fits but the body billows, or the body fits and you cannot fasten the neck. The four places a shirt is actually judged are the collar, the shoulder seam, the cuff and the body taper, and off the peg you get at most two of them right.

The shoulder is the one nobody thinks about and the one that cannot be fixed later. If the seam sits inboard of your shoulder point, the sleeve drags every time you reach; if it hangs past it, the whole shirt looks borrowed.

Fabric for a tropical climate

Fabric for a tropical climate comes down to two fibres and the weave each is given, and cotton alone comes in several weaves that behave quite differently on a hot day.

The same weight-and-weave reasoning applies to a jacket: which cloth handles the heat covers it in more detail.

Cotton, and what the weave does

• Poplin — smooth, fine, slightly crisp. The dress-shirt standard. Takes a press beautifully, shows creases readily.
• Oxford — a heavier basket weave, softer and more textured. Casual, durable, forgiving. Excellent for daytime.
• Twill — a diagonal weave with a subtle sheen. Drapes well and creases less than poplin.
• Voile and fine batiste — very light and semi-sheer. Cool as anything at midday, but wear a vest under it.

For Ko Samui, weave matters more than thread count. An open Oxford at a modest thread count will breathe better than a dense, high-count poplin that looks more impressive on paper.

Linen and linen-cotton

Nothing is cooler than linen. It creases, and on a shirt that reads as relaxed rather than scruffy, which is exactly right here. Linen-cotton blends give you most of the coolness with noticeably less creasing — a good compromise for a shirt worn to dinner.

What to avoid

Non-iron finishes and polyester blends. Both work by coating or replacing the fibre, and both trap heat. A slightly creased natural shirt looks better in this climate than a crisp synthetic one that leaves you damp.

Collars, cuffs and the details you choose

The collar, the cuffs and the smaller details are the choices you make rather than ones we make for you, and the collar is the most visible of them.

Collars

The collar frames your face and is the most visible decision you will make. A spread collar suits a slimmer face and works with a tie knot; a point collar elongates; a button-down is the most casual and the most forgiving worn open. If you will mostly wear the shirt without a tie, ask for a slightly taller collar band with enough structure to stand up on its own — an open collar that collapses ruins an otherwise good shirt.

Cuffs

Single (barrel) cuffs for everyday, double (French) cuffs for black tie and formal evenings. Cuff circumference should let the shirt sit at the base of your thumb without sliding over your hand — and if you wear a watch, tell us, because a watch-side cuff can be cut fractionally wider.

The rest

Placket or concealed front, chest pocket or none, pleats or a clean back, split yoke, mother-of-pearl buttons, contrast details inside the collar stand. None of these change the fit; all of them change whether the shirt feels like yours.

What we can finish the same day, and what we cannot

We can finish most made-to-measure shirts the same day, and we cannot finish a bespoke suit — that is three to five days. Between those two, four things decide the answer, and none of them is a promise made before we have seen the cloth and the order.

1. The hour you arrive decides more than anything else. A shirt started in the morning has a day behind it. One brought in at six in the evening does not, whatever the fabric.
2. Cloth decides more than quantity. Something in stock and straightforward to cut moves quickly. A cloth that has to be fetched, or one with a pattern that must be matched across the placket and pockets, does not.
3. One or two shirts is a different question from six. A set is a day’s work in the room even when a single shirt would not be.
4. A fitting still has to happen. Same-day means finished, not unchecked. If the only way to hit the deadline is to skip trying it on, we will say so rather than hand you something that has never been on your back.

The honest version: ask on your first day rather than your last, and you will almost always get a yes. Ask on your last and the answer depends on all four of the above. If a suit is on the list too, what else we finish the same day sets out the same boundaries for the rest of the workshop.

Ordering a set

Most clients who order one shirt come back for four. If you already know that, order two first, wear them for a day, then confirm the rest — a small tweak to the body taper or cuff after real wear is worth more than any amount of standing still in a fitting room. Your measurements are kept on file, so the follow-up order is quick and the later ones can be adjusted or re-ordered without you being on the island.

Ordering for an occasion changes the maths — shirts for a Samui wedding party need to match across several people, so start earlier than you think.

Many clients order shirts alongside a suit cut to measure so the collar height and cuff work properly with the jacket — a shirt collar that disappears under a jacket collar is the most common mismatch we correct.

Caring for shirts in humidity

Wash cool, skip the tumble dryer, and hang shirts damp on a shaped hanger — most of the ironing does itself. Store them with air around the collar rather than compressed in a stack, and never in a sealed plastic cover. The same principles that keep a suit fresh in this climate apply, with less effort.
